How to Properly Wash and Care for Your Uniforms: A Guide for Longevity
At 1ST COVERALL, we want to make sure you get the most wear out of your new garments. Proper care is essential not only for maintaining a clean and professional appearance but also for preserving the quality and durability of your uniforms.
Whether you’re outfitting a team or wearing your uniform daily, following these washing instructions will help extend the life of your garments and keep them looking sharp.
Embroidery ring marks are a normal part of production. Whilst we endeavour to remove them, please note they come out in the first wash.
- Read the Care Label First
Each uniform may have specific fabric requirements. Always check the care label before laundering. It provides essential information such as water temperature, drying methods, and whether the garment should be dry cleaned. Before washing, undo buttons, close zips and check pockets for loose or sharp objects
- Wash in Cold or Warm Water
To prevent fading and shrinkage, wash uniforms in cold or warm water. Hot water can break down fibers over time, especially in poly-cotton blends or garments with performance finishes.
- Use Mild Detergent
Choose a detergent that’s free of bleach or harsh chemicals. These additives can damage fabric fibers and degrade colour vibrancy. A mild detergent will clean effectively while being gentle on your uniforms.
- Separate Colors
Always wash light and dark uniforms separately to prevent colour transfer. This is particularly important for first-time washes, when garments are more likely to bleed.
- Avoid Fabric Softeners
While fabric softeners may make clothes feel softer, they can reduce the breathability and moisture-wicking properties of technical or performance fabrics. Instead, use a small amount of white vinegar if you want to soften garments naturally.
- Dry with Care
Tumble dry on a low setting or hang to air dry. High heat can cause shrinkage and weaken fibers. Hanging uniforms immediately after washing can also reduce wrinkles and eliminate the need for ironing.
- Iron Only When Necessary
If ironing is required, use a low heat setting. Avoid ironing on logos or embroidered areas. Place a cloth between the iron and the garment to protect the fabric.
- Store Properly
Hang uniforms on sturdy hangers in a well-ventilated space. Avoid overcrowding to prevent wrinkling and maintain garment shape.
Uniforms are an investment in your brand’s image and employee comfort.
By following these care instructions, you’ll not only maintain a polished, professional appearance but also extend the lifespan of your garments.
